Join master potter Katherine Mahoney for an immersive 3-day workshop focused on developing the skills and confidence needed to throw larger, taller and more ambitious forms on the wheel.

With over 50 years of experience as a maker and educator, Katherine is renowned for her beautifully crafted functional ware, technical expertise and thoughtful approach to form. This workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn directly from one of Australia's most respected potters in an intimate group setting.

Designed for intermediate to experienced throwers who are comfortable centring and throwing cylinders independently, the workshop will focus on the techniques required to successfully increase scale while maintaining control, proportion and good form.

Over three intensive days, Katherine will demonstrate and guide participants through the processes she uses to create larger vessels, including bowls, bottles, jugs and vases.

What You'll Learn

  • Increasing clay weight with confidence
  • Developing strong cylinders as the foundation for larger work
  • Pulling taller walls while maintaining even thickness
  • Throwing and joining cylinders to create larger vessels
  • Collaring and tapering techniques for bottles, jugs, vases and narrow-necked forms
  • Managing wall thickness and maintaining control as scale increases
  • Trimming larger forms
  • Making and using chucks for narrow-necked vessels
  • Refining and Finishing techniques

Days 1 and 2 will focus on throwing and form development, while Day 3 will be dedicated to trimming, chuck making, refinement and finishing.

With 21 hours of demonstrations, hands-on throwing and individual guidance, participants will have ample opportunity to practise, experiment and receive personalised feedback from Katherine throughout the workshop.

Unlimited pugged clay is included, allowing you to focus on learning and exploration without worrying about material limits. While the emphasis is on skill development rather than production, participants may select one piece to keep and have fired.
